Oil, gas and petrochemicals with their decisive influence have always
been important issues in Iran's economy and crucial to the country's
economic development. Being labeled as an always major energy supplying
country, Iran is mainly considered a heaven for companies with
international desire and background in oil, gas and petrochemicals.
Having been replete with companies dealing with oil and gas, a serious
need for a central unit to coordinate and organize the members of the
industry was arising. Finally, in 2003, The Iranian Oil, Gas and
Petrochemical Products' Exporters Association (OPEX) was founded to
promote a perfect harmony among the members of the industry.
OPEX, the leading contributor to the industry, set off its journey by
only 54 members and at present speaks for the interests of over 300
member companies engaged in the Iran downstream and upstream oil
industry on a range of common issues relating to production of oil,
natural gas, different types of lubricants, engine oil, base oil,
bitumen, paraffin, and many more..; refining and also distribution of
the products in competitive and non-competitive areas.

OPEX's role is to inform its members of proposed legislation and related
developments; help form and advocate the member's position in the
industry, and do effective marketing for members in domestic and
international markets. OPEX is also an authoritative source of
information and reference on the IRAN downstream industry. OPEX has
organized over 120 cooperative partnerships so far between its members
and other organizations and companies both domestically and
internationally. These partnerships are meant to pave the way for mutual
conveyance of experiences. It is also worthwhile to mention that OPEX
will step forward to settle disputes arisen in any of the partnerships
arranged by it.

OPEX energy partnerships have long been hailed as some of the most
successful foreign programs. Some of the established partnerships have
been between OPEX and Africa, Asia and Central & Eastern Europe. Focus
areas have included petroleum exploration, production and
transportation; natural gas exploration, production, and transportation.
Almost every aspect of organizational operations has been addressed
through these partnerships.

Leadership in OPEX is quite simple to define. All OPEX member companies
participate in the OPEX General Assembly and this body elects a
President, currently Dr Farzan Golchin, a Vice-President (Abbasali
Eslami), and appoints a Secretary General (Mahdi Espandiari) to manage
the day-to-day core activities of the Association. OPEX has also
included five specialized commissions in its structure:
-Petrochemical Commission
-Lubricant Commission
-Bitumen Commission
-Paraffin Commission
-Swap, Transit and Bunkering Commission
Commissions are categorized based on the products that the members
produce or deal with. Each commission will hold its own meetings and
sessions monthly and decide on the principles and shortcomings that the
commission is working on and report to the general assembly.
